Character Name: Orren Organa
Character Age: 30
Canon: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (AU, because he’s a tabletop OC)
Canon Point: Shortly after the crew of the Ebon Hawk escapes the Leviathan.
History/World: Well, the world is Star Wars so I figure I don’t need to say much here, but for things relating to the specific sub-setting of the Knights of the Old Republic era, go: here
As for Orren’s personal history, here’s a rambling summary of the events of the tabletop game he was created for: boom
Beyond what’s covered in that write-up, Carolyn and I have agreed upon the part Orren will play during the events of KotOR for her Revan. After a bit of soul-searching, Orren eventually made his way back to Dantooine and rejoined the Jedi Enclave - remaining there for the better part of a year outside of missions that pulled him off-world. He meets Revan there after she escapes Taris and recognizes her immediately, which prompts a furious Orren to demand answers from the Jedi Council. He encounters the mind-wiped Revan -- Marila -- several times during her training, and is eventually assigned by the Jedi Council to join in her mission to find the Star Maps. As a Jedi Master, he has the wisdom, experience, and skill to aid in the mission, and as a long-time acquaintance of Revan’s, he’s uniquely able to notice any lingering traces of Darth Revan.
As they go from world to world, ‘Marila’ begins to trust Orren due to him being honest, competent, and quite often the voice of reason among the chaotic voices of the Ebon Hawk’s crew. Meanwhile, despite his anxiety at how similar ‘Marila’ is to pre-Sith Revan, he slowly starts to warm to her - partially because of how closely she resembles his old friend (mixed bag that it is) and because she does the right thing time and again.
He remains a part of her crew until the Ebon Hawk and all aboard are captured by a Sith Interceptor The Leviathan. While ‘Marila’, Orren, and the break out of their holding cells, they’re not able to escape before Darth Malak arrives on the scene. He corners an exhausted ‘Marila’ and reveals that she’s actually a mind-wiped Revan. Before he can do anything else, Orren intervenes. He apologizes to Revan for not telling her the truth and then engages Malak to buy everyone else the time to escape. His duel with Malak is competitive, but inconclusive as the arrival of other Sith forces Orren’s surrender.
When he arrives in Dualis, Orren will have spent a few days as Malak’s prisoner.
Personality: At first glance, Orren’s everything you’d expect from a noble-bred Jedi. He's patient, adroit, clever, well-spoken, and generally carries himself with a quiet, mannered dignity. He has an understated, wry sense of humor and all the charm that one might expect from that pedigree, but also a good deal more genuine warmth than might be expected. He has the insight and desire for peaceful resolution of a natural diplomat, but he won't hesitate to intervene forcefully should he think it's necessary. Underpinning all of it is an honest desire to help people and a deeply-held belief in the ideal of the Jedi Knight - in the peacekeeper who defends those who can't defend themselves, offers help or guidance to those who need it, and stands against the darkness.
He is not, however, what you’d call orthodox as a Jedi. While he generally follows the rules and has that fine layer of Jedi repression holding him back from personal desires, he’s a lot more in touch with his emotions than the more conservative mainstream of the Jedi Order. He’s also the type of person who will defy his orders if he believes that they’ll do more harm than good. This is demonstrated by him being willing to defy the express orders of the Jedi Council to follow Revan’s call to action to face the Mandalorians - believing that, regardless of what the Council thought, they couldn’t call themselves protectors or peacekeepers while they ignored the greatest threat to that peace in decades and allowed millions to die or be conquered.
His participation in that war, though, wasn’t good for him. While he was away from Revan, Malak, and Meetra for large chunks of the war, their he saw the writing on the wall regarding their slow slide to the dark side well in advance … but he didn’t act on it at the beginning because he was reluctant to believe that his closest friends were truly capable of something like that. As the war pressed on, he got over that reluctance and began to butt heads with them over their harsh methods. They came to believe that the ends justify the means, where he held firm that there were lines that they shouldn’t cross. He tried to convince them to do things the right way and guide them back to the light, but he ultimately couldn’t turn them away from the dark side.
The end of the war left Orren a much sadder and wearier person than he had been before. He’d lost two of his closest friends, the love of his life, and had a cause he sincerely believed in come to a horrifying, ugly end. Despite the fact that there was probably nothing he could have done to change things, Orren still feels a great deal of guilt over their fall and the way that the war ended in general. This guilt is also part of a larger tendency to hold himself personally responsible for perceived failures. He always feels like there’s something different or something more that he could have done to avert disaster, and constantly coming up short in those moments has given him a deep-seated sense of inadequacy. He’s powerful, capable, and clever, but he just never seems to be enough when it really matters - something that gives him no small amount of self-doubt.
He also has this sort of intertwining complex that he’s nothing special. Orren has a remarkably strong connection to the Force that would make him a prodigy in any other time or place, but he grew up alongside Revan, who is the sort of talent that comes along once in millennia. Growing up in her shadow, he never resented her, but she became his benchmark for ‘remarkable’ and he simply doesn’t compare. As a result, he simply never regarded himself as someone capable of particularly spectacular things. This was both subverted and reinforced as a result of his skirmish with the Jedi Councillors. That incident showed him and everyone else what he was capable of when his back’s to the wall and he has no room to doubt himself … but it happened in an instance where he was effectively mind-controlled - something he thinks he should have the strength to resist. It puts him in this weird place where he now has an awareness of his power, but he also doesn’t have much faith in himself.
The end result of all this is that, despite the fact that he’s relatively young, he’s quite emotionally run-down. He’s lost a lot of people he cares about, he’s seen a lot of things that were important to him go bad, he blames himself for a lot of it … and that wears on you. He hides it well, and it only really hits him quieter moments, but there’s no completely concealing how tired he is.
He keeps going though, because honestly, he’s not sure what else he would do with his life. Being a Jedi is the only path that he’s ever really known, and while he’s met his family and is glad to know them, he doesn’t really have any desire to live the life that he might have had. Despite all the pain that being a Jedi has brought him, despite the fact that the Council doggedly refuses to learn anything from the Mandalorian Wars, despite the fact that the Order doesn’t live up to what Orren thinks it should be, being a Jedi Knight the most fulfilling way he could imagine living his life. Ideally, though, he’d get to be more of a knight errant - travelling the galaxy, seeing the breadth of it, while helping people and performing his Jedi duties as needed.
Aside from all of that … well, being the beleaguered straight man/long-suffering dad friend/adult in the room seems to be his lot in life. He’s played the voice of reason in most of the circles he’s wound up in throughout the course of his life, and while he’s slow to anger unless someone is doing something really heinous, he can be exasperated through his mannered politeness. He loves nature and he finds a lot of peace in immersing himself in it. The feeling seems to be mutual given his Disney Princess-esque affinity for animals.
To sum it all up, Orren’s a kind, goodhearted man who sees helping and protecting others as his life’s purpose, but he has just been continually kicked by life. Everything just kinda falls apart for him - usually through no fault of his own - and he blames himself for not having had the ability or wherewithal to fix things, but he keeps going nonetheless because he doesn’t really see another option. He hides the pain behind a tired smile and a polite reassurance that he’s alright, and then pushes on in an effort to fix the things that he helped to break. If he can leave things even a little better than he found them, he considers that a victory.
Items: Orren doesn’t have too many personal possessions. His clothing consists of simple Jedi garb - robes, tunic, trousers, sturdy boots. He’s got a few odds and ends in his belt pouches such as rations, a fibercord grappling hook, a commlink, a handheld holoprojector, and a compact rebreather. The big one is his lightsaber, a double-bladed lightsaber with some low-key decorations and golden blades. If he can't keep that, I'd ask that he can at least keep the crystal in the heart of it so that he can eventually build a new one in the city when he can track down the tools and parts he'd need to do so. Finally, Orren's right arm is mechanical from mid-bicep down.
Powers/skills: Orren has the typical suite of powers typical to a Jedi with a deep connection to the Force. He’s able to sense the presence of other lifeforms, read their thoughts and emotions, and project his own -- though people with telepathic powers of their own or strong enough will could keep him out. He can even influence the thoughts of others, though this only works on the weak-willed and even then he doesn’t like using it. The Force also grants him a limited form of precognition, which usually manifests in the form of “bad feelings”, intuition, or visions of the future -- usually snippets or moments without the context to fully understand what he’s seeing and feeling. Orren can also use the Force for a number of physical effects. He can move things or restrain people with his mind, draw upon the Force to enhance his speed and reflexes, heal wounds, and purge toxins from his body.. For a more comprehensive list of things a Jedi can do, here’s a list of powers from Knights of the Old Republic and a more general one.
Orren’s also a highly capable combatant, whether armed or unarmed. He’s a competent shot with a blaster and an experienced hand-to-hand combatant, but he’s best with a lightsaber (or similar sword-like weapon) in his hand. Orren is a master of Form IV, a highly acrobatic style of lightsaber combat that makes use his natural agility, dexterity, and long reach. He’s capable of overwhelming opponents with ferocious flurries of inhumanly fast, dangerously precise attacks. Form IV has one major drawback though, in that it’s exceptionally physically taxing. Even with his force-enhanced cardio, he’ll tire during extended fights -- especially when facing multiple opponents. While he had the skill necessary to face four members of the Jedi Council and defeat three of them, the fight took so much out of him that he was completely exhausted while facing the fourth.
Finally, in D&D terms, Orren’s got a very high Charisma score. He’s a skilled orator who knows how to work a crowd and shape opinion thanks to his time working as one of the mouthpiece/diplomats of the Revanchist movement. On a personal level, his eloquence and his knack for reading people allows him to be very persuasive and charming when he wants to be. Finally, as mentioned above, he’s got an impressive affinity with animals. He’s not Doctor Dolittle, but he can read their moods and connect to them very easily - even without using the Force to influence how they perceive him.
He’s also an excellent cook and has a talent for picking up instruments fairly quickly, for whatever that’s worth.
